We have prepared a new annual Rosedell Parent Survey for you to complete either online or on a hard copy. Follow this link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/RosedellParentSurvey2013-2014 to complete the online survey. Please complete the survey and press "submit." If you need a hard copy they are available in the office. We are very interested in our parent's opinions on the following topics so we can improve our school. The topics are school environment, school facilities, school communication, classroom instruction, special programs, character education and parent participation. Responses will be shared at our Site Council Meeting, Staff Meeting, and School Board in late April. We will also post our results in our website so parents are informed of our communities' opinions.

PTA is liquidating our on hand stock of spirit wear!
Due to the low participation in fundraising efforts and very few direct donations at the beginning of the school year, we now need to ask for direct donations from students to pay for the “End of the Year” 6th grade events.
6th Grade Social, T-shirts and Yearbook Signing Pizza Party
We cannot require individual students to pay for any activities therefore we must raise the money through donations. We are asking for a donation of $35 per student to cover the costs of the Social, special order 6th Grade T-Shirts and the Yearbook Signing Pizza Party.
If we do not raise all of the $$ necessary for the “end of the year” events, then we will have to cancel things based on what we do have by first eliminating the t-shirts, secondly the pizza party and then scaling back on the Social. More information on these will be sent home closer to June. Graduation day refreshments are hosted by 5th grade parents and are not in jeopardy of cancelation.

Kindergarten & Transitional Kindergarten Round Up Week
February 24 - February 28
(Enrollment forms are accepted throughout the year.)
Kindergarten Round-up is a pre-registration time for the 2014-2015 school year.
Kindergarten Entry- Children that turn 5 by September 1.
Transitional Kindergarten "TK"- Children that turn 5 between September 1 and December 2.

With the launch of the new Common Core Standards in California, the state has decided to eliminate most of the STAR state testing and focus on the next generation exams; only 5th Grade Science and Physical Education will continue in 2014. Across the state, all schools will pilot the new “Smarter Balanced” online computer assessments. Last year, Rosedell was chosen to pilot the 5th and 6th Grade Language Arts tests and provide feedback to the state, in addition to the regular STAR tests.
The state has notified us that our “Smarter Balanced” pilot in 2014 will be 3rd through 6th grade in English Language Arts and Math, plus a “performance task” for either subject. Performance tasks may include student research, meeting in groups for teacher-led discussions, pre-planning steps to solve a scenario and/or completing sophisticated tasks related to a “real life” problem, i.e., using math equations to create a blueprint of a community garden with a specific amount of planters, size of planters, benches, sand box etc. The window for testing will be April 7th to May 16th. Exams are expected to take about 3 to 3.5 hours total over several testing days in our new computer lab. Tests are un-timed. We purposely purchased larger monitors since the students have to toggle between two parts on the screen. Testing schedules will be created as the state provides us with more details about the pilot tests.
Parents and schools will not be provided with results in the summer since this a continuation of the “field tests” to ensure the final iteration of the exams in 2015 accurately measure the new grade level standards. According to the state, “Field testing is critical to ensure that assessment items are accessible to all students and produce results that are valid, reliable, and fair. The spring 2014 Smarter Balanced Field Test will test the performance of over 20,000 newly developed test items and evaluate the test delivery system. Items deemed suitable for use on the live (i.e., operational) tests, which will begin in the 2014-15 school year, will be used to populate the test item bank. Also, the Field Test will help ensure that the Smarter Balanced assessment items are placed on an accurate scale to determine final achievement levels as well as their corresponding descriptors.”

More information will be provided as we begin to get more detailed information at the site-level for planning the field tests this spring.
Information for parents about the 2013-14 state physical education testing that will occur next spring was sent home in the fall. The letter explained the six testing categories and gave suggestions on how to practice these skills at home so students are prepared. Please click here to view the letter. Teachers will continue to show the students the correct skills involved to master the categories and practice the skills throughout their PE lessons to meet the state standards. Parents can access more information about the test from the state website at http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/pf/pft11fasqa.asp. Our goal is for all our 5th graders to meet the proficiency standard in all six fitness categories!
We have already kicked off another exciting season with the Performing Arts Center at College of the Canyons! For instance we have already had an exciting performance at Rosedell for our 5th and 6th graders call "SOULysztik" featuring the history of Hip Hop dance, music, and culture. This year there will be a number of "bus in" performances at the Center and in-house assemblies at Rosedell. Bus-in shows have limited tickets for parent chaperones. Teachers will select chaperones from their parent volunteer list. The school assemblies are open to ALL parents, so please join us! Thank you to the PTA for helping us to provide these high quality and memorable educational experiences for our students.
This year's PAC assemblies at Rosedell include: Crayon Court (January 24th - Pre-k/K), Aesop's Fables (March 7th - Grades 1, 2, 3), LA Opera - Don't be Afraid, It's Just Opera! (Date TBD - Grades 3, 4), SOULysztik (September 20, Grades 5, 6), and A Visit with Great African Americans (February 7 - Grades 3/4 and 5/6 - two shows).
Bus In Assemblies (at the PAC) include: Kuniko (Nov 8 - Grades 1, 2, 3), Peking Acrobats (Jan 31 - Grade 4), Let Freedom Ring (February 21 - Grade 5), and Ladysmith Black Mambazo (February 27 - Grade 6)
|Every Wednesday is Early Release Day. ALL Grades (Kindergarten thru 6th) will start at the regular time (8:10am) and dismiss at 1:44pm.|
